Gearbox

The gearbox cover was entirely distorted from a foot peg that it was very hard to shift. So...had to buy a new one. I had to polish it because it had been on a shelf for 50 years. Bushes were good.

New Cover

I also upgraded the mainshaft high gear and gearbox door in the primary to the later model without the bush coming through. Also, in the process of centering the connecting rods I went through a few exercises with shims as I thought I would need to shim the mainshaft. PETE R (RIP) shared the fact that one could shim the timing side of the mainshaft and the third gear dogs would seat further up the gear and there would be room for it. Also, notice in the second picture the bodge from Brit Bike member RF Whatley regarding the extra hole in the inner cover. This is so one can drain the water from the gearbox. When I restored my 69 I made the hole lower. There was a major problem as can be seen in picture three as the pin for the inner thrust washer was just about gone and I had a mechanic put in another one that now works great. Replaced all five springs in the outer cover and found out the gears worked perfectly if no gaskets are used. In fact the only gaskets are the head gasket, junction block gasket, door gasket and the points cover gasket!

The second picture shows an area of concern. How to get the water out of the outer cover of the gearbox? I learned how to make this bodge from the postings of:

Mr. RF Whatley on the Brit Bike Forum.

He explained that to do this drill a 3/8 hole through the inner cover as shown in this photo. It can be flush with the bottom of the inside cover.
